It's flashy sure but like the optic camo feels like a crutch. Same could be said about the Venom punch. The optic/stealth camo while a bit amusing? It makes the game far too easy and feels like a "I ****ed up button." It too often feels like a crutch. But is it better than the 2018 original? No. But I have played Ori, Cuphead and Shovel KnightĬlick to expand.It's not a huge discrepancy.īut look at IGN's review of Spider-Man (2018) compared to Miles Morales (2020). On the other if you go too far to the other side of the coin, and try to be too current/trendy/innovative or whatever word you choose? You can run into other issues as well. But where do you find the balance between familiarity and newness? If you just keep adhering to something because that's the way it's always been? You risk not innovating and the genre/industry passing you by. It would be hard for any dev to not feel a sense of well trodden territory.

I don't know if it's a way for them to try and make things feel different in a series that has been around for 35 years now. I do think they get wrapped up in gimmicks. 3D Land afterall was as much about a return to the kind of fundamentals established in the likes of Super Mario Land on GBA, etc. Mario's fundamentals have always been rock solid. I don't think the issue is so much about returning to fundamentals. Just like I didn't enjoy BotW, not everyone is going to enjoy this game or give it a 9 or 10/10. Jim Sterling gave BotW a 7/10 and got lampooned for it. I think the points he made are interesting to note. The best Mario games take their goofy ideas and tie them into core mechanics that directly impact puzzles and platforming. It’s all extremely silly, and I’ll be the first to admit that it does give the game a fun flavour, but it doesn’t add anything in terms of gameplay, and that’s surprising. Flowers are shaped like paws and shrubs have cat ears. Goombas are furry, with cat ears and tails. There’s no better example of this than the fact that almost every single creature, enemy, and object in Lake Lapcat is part cat. This is a Mario title driven more by gimmicks than gameplay. "I enjoyed my time with Bowser’s Fury but it ultimately doesn’t feel that essential. And then when the reward for getting all those koroks is essentially a golden poo? It doesn't respect the player's time. Mario Oddssey though it felt like you got Moon's for basically nothing rather than being a bit of a challenge or test of platforming skill. More so than what I ever felt in WW and TP's fetch quests. But when you have 999 koroks like you do in BotW? It felt like excessive padding. The world design in Odyssey for instance is fantastic. That isn't to say there is an absence of quality. Both BotW and Mario Odyssey are a bit of a lesson in Quantity over Quality imo.

While on the subject of BotW? I think it and Mario Odyssey share a similar problem. Many of the things in BotW to me felt gimmicky too. It just failed to hit me in the same way. It was a bold new direction, but I didn't like all the changes. Or I think of BotW? I feel they perhaps went too far with BotW. Other games get stuff called feature creep.

Take a game like Duke Nukem which was stuck in development hell.
